Snow White Halloween in the Pharmacy

Setting the scene, we had the pharmacy itself as the cottage of the Seven Dwarfs, complete with trees, shutters, and forest animals.        (notice our almost free-standing tree…) Then we decorated our flight commander (aka the evil queen)’s office as the castle’s dungeon laboratory, complete with the magic mirror and the heart box. The archway was made from painted cardboard boxes and for the heart, I printed a heart, ironed it onto red fabric, and turned it into a small pillow (SP12). Lastly, we made the “Dwarfs’ Mine”… we hung sheets from the ceiling, spray painted the two sheets on the inside with glitter spray paint and taped glittery “diamonds” all over them. Not super fancy, but it did the trick. Kids come through the clinic every year for trick-or-treating. We played music from the Disney movie while they came through… they were all so adorable… they mostly got excited about Snow White, Dopey and the Evil Queen :) Of course it was not complete without the whole gang: Inspiration for the cottage …

Dwarf Slippers and Shoe Covers

Seven Dwarfs Costumes – Part Two I finally finished our Seven Dwarfs costumes yesterday! Pictures to come. First, here are the slippers and shoe covers to go along with them. I took inspiration from here, although I didn’t follow her directions exactly. I used felt for the main part of the slippers and material from my snuggie that the pups tore apart for the inside layers, plus stuffing from an old torn apart dog bed (see, if it wasn’t for the pups destroying so many things, I wouldn’t have as many materials to work with) ;) Here’s the making of: Not everyone wanted to wear slippers all day in the pharmacy… so I came up with some dwarf shoe covers too. I tried one out and it worked on me, but I’m hoping the rest fit ok… I was very approximate with my sizing :/ – we’ll see on Thursday!     (SP11B)

Seven Dwarfs Costumes – Part One. Super easy costume belts! Here was my rough design: Materials Needed: Fabric in 2 colors Batting (or another layer of thicker fabric) Thread Small craft knife or scissors Velcro Fray Check Iron Sewing machine STEP 1: CUT YOUR FABRIC. The strip needs to be cut about 2-3x the width that you want the belt. The length is the waist circumference plus a few inches (just to give room for the velcro strip). STEP 2: FOLD AND IRON. Fold over about 1/4-1/2″ along each long edge and iron, then fold in half and iron flat.    STEP 3: SEW. Fold in each short end about 1/4-1/2″ and sew closed. Then sew along the long open edge, as close to the edge as you can get. STEP 4: ADD VELCRO. Attach a 4-5″ piece of velcro to opposite ends and sides of the belt (as shown in the design above). STEP 5: MAKE BUCKLE. Figure out what size you want the buckle. Cut out two pieces of colored fabric and one of batting. Sandwich the batting, sew …

Flowery Infinity Scarf

I really liked the flower pattern on one of the pieces of fabric I got to make my alphabet magnets a few months ago, but wasn’t sure what I could do with it until I ran across a nice lightweight blue fabric on the red tag sale at Joann’s the other day. I decided it would make a great scarf. The colors coordinated perfectly… so I used this and this as inspiration to create my own infinity scarf (sewing project #10). A simple project… plus it only cost me $2.55 and less than an hour of my time. I used exactly 1/2 yard of the blue fabric and a small rectangle of the flowery fabric – in the photos it is doubled-up; it’s one big circle otherwise. I had to crop that second picture down a lot… that is what I call a crazy messy room. It’s the aftermath of lots of laundry, no time to fold, and a puppy running around terrorizing the house. Cloudee

So we said we weren’t going to foster anymore – mostly because we rent and the pet portion of our lease says 2 is the limit – but also because the two pups are a handful as it is. And they aren’t very social… we really need to work on their socialization skills. But after looking at Cloudee’s little pup face it was hard to do anything except say, “we’ll take him!” So we did. And it was wonderful. Finn and Zoe weren’t sure what to do with him at first. Finn would just run away scared and Zoe just kept sniffing him like she couldn’t figure out what he was. They finally warmed up to him the day before I dropped him off with his forever family – it was adorable. Zoe was really sweet and gentle when she started to play with him, and whenever Finn would start to play too rough, Zoe would intervene. Too cute. I think they really liked their little friend. Cloudee was only with us for about 6 …
