Happy 3-Year Sewiversary!

(To me) :) It’s that time of year again! Time to reflect on the past year of sewing and make some new goals for next year. I love having goals but I don’t always keep up with them. At the moment I can’t even remember what some of last year’s were… so let’s see how they turned out, shall we… :) 1. Make Halloween costumes! Yes… absolutely, this happened big time!   Here’s a round up of my Halloween posts: 2 September – fabric share (at the bottom of the post) 10 September – progress check (at the bottom of the post) – completed Olaf’s under layers (onesie and leggings) and main costume body, and Anna’s long sleeve shirt 19 September – Anna’s bodice (drafting, muslins, and make-shift machine embroidery) and skirt (pattern alterations) 28 October – progress shots of Anna’s skirt, Olaf’s headpiece/hat, Elsa’s dress, and Kristoff’s tunic 28 October – Super Girl! 1 November – Frozen… the round up! Phew… we’ll see what I got myself into as we get closer to Halloween this year… …

2-Year Sewiversary + A Tour of My Sewing Space!

“I’ve learned so much from my mistakes… I’m thinking of making a few more” -Unknown I love that quote. I feel like it describes my sewing perfectly. It’s been a full two years now of learning from my mistakes and I’m still completely hooked. Over the past year, I’ve completed more than 40 projects (see them all here) and accomplished most of my sewing goals from last year… I think. Let’s take a look at those goals, shall we?! 1. Make a structured garment of some kind. Okay so I admit I haven’t ventured too far into wovens yet. Or structured anything. I made a structured basket, does that count? My blazer had a little structure. It seems the majority of the sewing community recommends starting with wovens and venturing into knits. Needless to say I’ve definitely gone the opposite direction. BUT, to be fair, about 98% of my RTW wardrobe is knits, so I like to think that I’m just being realistic and making things I’ll actually wear. 2. Become one with zipper installation. Hmm… let’s …

My First Year of Sewing: A Review

It’s my sewiversary! Ok, so maybe that’s not a thing. But it could be! :) On July 1st of last year, I got my sewing machine in the mail (yay!). I got the Brother XR9500PRW machine from their Project Runway series (got it on Amazon for $179.99 at the time – now it looks like it’s even a little cheaper). I bought it as a birthday present to myself because I wanted to try a new hobby. It had very decent reviews – and seemed to be highly recommended for beginners. It’s nothing fancy, but it’s been a great machine so far. Only complaint is the needle threading system – it worked wonderfully for a while (I thought it was the best invention on the planet while it worked!) then something got bent or off somehow and it doesn’t work anymore. To be fair, I haven’t really tried to fix it yet, so maybe when I do it’ll be just fine. Also the lettering/monogramming is nothing to write home about. But overall I’d definitely recommend this machine …
