Sew Stretchy: The Monthly Stitch

My May entry for The Monthly Stitch! Sew Stretchy! To be honest I feel more frightened of sewing wovens than knits… but one of these days I should probably learn the proper way to sew stretchy fabrics. For now I’m just faking it as I go… I found this awesome floral jersey at Joann’s and immediately remembered this contrast back sheath dress tutorial.  I traced the shape from a shirt and pencil skirt like the tutorial suggests. I cut the front and back and sewed the side seams… then tried it on. I decided the fabric was too thin for me to feel comfortable in. So instead I folded the top inside the skirt to give it a lining, added some elastic at the top and a ruffle layer at the bottom to give it some extra length and turned it into a flared pencil skirt. The purple jersey was leftover from the last skirt I made. With it being lined, it’s super comfortable and I’ll definitely wear it… but for my next project I’m hoping to go …

Me-Made-May… maybe next year :)

I’m just getting into this whole sewing world, and I’m realizing more and more every time I come online that the online sewing community is massive! :) It’s awesome. Seriously… lately I’ve been going online in the evenings and Danny keeps asking me what I’m doing. My answer is always something like “oh, you know, surfing the interwebs”… then he says “pinteresting?” (lol)… then I say “no… reading sewing blogs!”. Can you tell how I spend my time online?… :) I’m not sure which one makes me awesomer… but I’m pretty sure he thinks I’ve gone a little insane. But that’s okay with me!… and anyway I can’t keep up! There are so many! (And yes, I realize I just created a whole slew of words in that paragraph…). So anyway, it seems that everyone and their sister (and mother and brother) is participating in Me-Made-May or “MMM’14” – it’s a challenge for people to make a conscious effort to wear the items that they make. I would have loved to participate… but I have two …

Chiffon, Tulle & Jersey Knit Reversible Skirt

This is my 100th post on WordPress! Crazy! In honor of that, I got brave and had Danny take pictures of me for this one. As you may have noticed, I usually do headless shots of myself… half because I really don’t like taking pictures of myself… and half because usually when I finish making something I’m too lazy to brush my hair enough to look half decent for the picture. My hair spends most of its time in a sock bun at work; the rest of the time it’s usually wet from the shower in a messy bun. Today, though, is my first real day off in about a month (work has been a bit crazy) :/ — I had a few errands to run (picked up a few things for a project I’m working on for that day coming up next Sunday)… so I actually fixed my hair! I figured it was a prime opportunity to get a few photos of my new skirt. I made this one for the May Sew-along for Pretty …

Mercy, Explore, and Presence

So I’m a little late posting these… but here are my February, March, and April Sugar Block Club quilt squares! I’ve realized I have no color scheme… but I’m hoping it all comes together in the end! And yes, I also realize my March block is a little off (oops…) but that’s all part of my learning process; I didn’t feel like fixing it… I’m just letting it add character (although my OCD is really kicking in every time I look at it) :/ Gotta stay strong and just leave it…

Sewing Double: My 1st Monthly Stitch Challenge

A couple of weeks ago, in a search for inspiration for things to make, I stumbled across The Monthly Stitch. They put up a sewing challenge each month – whoever takes part in the challenge posts their creation on the site. It’s an awesome idea for a sewing community! Plus, as a beginner, I feel like it’s just the push I need to challenge myself with new projects. Hence… my first contribution! April’s challenge is to revisit a pattern you’ve already made and create another (or, however else you interpret the “sewing double/seeing double” idea). Well, I’ve been planning to make my sister a maternity shirt to go in her second trimester box (see her first trimester box here)…. and shhh… I’m still pretty sure she doesn’t read this blog, so hopefully she doesn’t see it (I’m going to be in trouble if my family ever starts reading my blog… I won’t be able to post things before I gift them…). So anyway, I’ve been looking at a few different patterns. I especially love the Megan …
