I took Alisa’s advice yesterday… :) I didn’t know what to sew and she said make what you need most in your closet. Simple advice and yet so true! And what do I need most right now!? Pajama shorts! A simple project but much needed! I took Ruthie’s lead and used my McCALL’S M6848 pattern – view D. I had just enough of this blue gingham fabric from my grandma stash to make these. They’re super comfy – I’ll definitely be making more! Until next time,

My First Year of Sewing: A Review

It’s my sewiversary! Ok, so maybe that’s not a thing. But it could be! :) On July 1st of last year, I got my sewing machine in the mail (yay!). I got the Brother XR9500PRW machine from their Project Runway series (got it on Amazon for $179.99 at the time – now it looks like it’s even a little cheaper). I bought it as a birthday present to myself because I wanted to try a new hobby. It had very decent reviews – and seemed to be highly recommended for beginners. It’s nothing fancy, but it’s been a great machine so far. Only complaint is the needle threading system – it worked wonderfully for a while (I thought it was the best invention on the planet while it worked!) then something got bent or off somehow and it doesn’t work anymore. To be fair, I haven’t really tried to fix it yet, so maybe when I do it’ll be just fine. Also the lettering/monogramming is nothing to write home about. But overall I’d definitely recommend this machine …

My dad is awesome. Check out his garden: Actually, this is an old picture… I think he has a bunch more growing in there now. But I like this picture with the rainbow :) So he’s retired and spends most of his time in the garden. Therefore a tie is probably the last thing in the world he actually needs. But then again I’m pretty sure he doesn’t actually NEED anything. For his birthday a little over a week ago I got him a Frog Log… yes, this is actually a thing… their website calls it a “Critter Saving Escape Ramp”. So you can tell how desperate I was for ideas. LOL… ok, actually I think the Frog Log is brilliant… but hey, that’s just me… I spent too much time in my childhood fishing out California newts (absolutely adorable creatures) from the pool to think this is NOT an essential device for everyone with a pool. But anyway – it’s Father’s Day, and a handmade tie seemed appropriate now that I’m sewing :) So that’s …

Christmas Crafting, Part 2

(See Part One) Before it gets too far from the season… #6. Infinity Scarf (gift for Bethany) #7. Finn’s Christmas Stocking! Finished on Christmas day – luckily we weren’t celebrating with the pups until I got back from California :) It turned out a lot smaller than Zoe’s but I didn’t realize it until I got back and put them next to each other. Oh, well… :) He still enjoyed the treats that came out of it! I used this pattern. Here is Zoe with hers from last year: #8. Magic The Gathering Coffee Mug (gift for Danny) I tried out the sharpie technique (write anything on the mug with a sharpie and bake it for a half hour at 350 degrees) – worked like a charm. I cut out the symbols, traced them onto the mug and filled them in with colored sharpies. Danny is excited to bring it to work.        #9.
